Spirit

The spirit is the hidden part of our being (Psalm 51:6) which was created by God to communicate with Him.

In Genesis 2:7 we can see that God made us with this human spirit,

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

“the dust of the ground” refers to the physical body and “a living being” refers to the soul, which is the mental and emotional part of a person, their mind, will and emotion. “The breath of life” refers to the spirit as we can see when we look at Proverbs 20:27,

“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD,”

The Hebrew word for “spirit” here is ‘neshamah’. And ‘neshamah’ is translated as breath in Genesis 2:7

These three verses continue to confirm that God has made us with this human spirit,

“The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” Job 33:4

“The burden of the word of the LORD against Israel. Thus says the LORD, who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him:” Zechariah 12:1

“Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it:” Isaiah 42:5

As we know that after the fall of man our ability to fellowship with God was broken and our spirit became dead and dormant. We were dead but when we repented and accepted Jesus Christ, we were made alive and our spirit was reconnected again with God as we can see from the verses below,

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,” Colossians 2:13

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,” Ephesians 2:1

“even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),” Ephesians 2:5

Our Christian life begins with our human spirit.

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." John 3:6

From the time of our salvation, our spirit was regenerated, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." Ezekiel 36:26-27

The Holy Spirit joined with our spirit,

“This is how we know that we live in Him and He in us; He has given us of His Spirit” 1 John 4:13

“But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him." (1 Corinthians 6:17)

The Holy Spirit is in us, and He dwells in us

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Romans 8:11

The Lord’s dwelling place is in our spirit as Paul tells Timothy here,

“The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.” 2 Timothy 4:22

The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God,

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” Romans 8:16

Now that His Holy Spirit dwells in us, we can address God the Father in the same manner Jesus did (Mark 14:35-36)

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Galatians 4:6

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15

Jesus tells us that we must worship Him in spirit,

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24

God has done his part, our part is to renew our natural mind and apply Gods word in line with the mind of your spirit, then you can live the life that God has already done by His Grace, by faith, with the help of the Holy Spirit. We just need to dive in the word and trust the Holy Spirit to do his ministry.

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” John 16:13-14

So in our spirit:

We have the mind of Christ,

“For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:16

We have power, love and a sound mind,

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

We can see the attributes of the spirit,

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

If we read through the whole chapter of Romans 8 it tells us all about life in the spirit. We have also compiled a list of verses on our spiritual mirror page which show who we are in the spirit.

These verses below sum up perfectly how as Christians we should live out our new life in the spirit

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Galatians 5:16-18

“that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.” Philemon 1:6

So the purpose of our spirit is to contact and receive God Himself and allow Him to grow in us daily. As we do this, His life will spread from our spirit into our soul and we can reflect and express Him with our transformed soul.
