The body is the physical part of man and it is through the body that we connect to the physical world using our five senses - sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.
Let’s look at Genesis 2:7 where the first man was created;
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul”
The body is the part of man which God formed from the dust of the ground and that’s why the elements of the human body can also be found in the ground. This body did not have life until God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul”
In the bible the body is also described as the flesh as seen in Genesis 2:21 “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place closed up the flesh in its place”.
The body is God’s unique design and His works are evident by looking at the incredible nature of our physical bodies. It is the most unique and complex organism in the world, made up of billions of cells and countless parts.
“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works,” Psalm 139:14
We were made to live forever in our perfect relationship with God but as we know, man disobeyed God’s command in Genesis 3. Man’s disobedience not only affected our spiritual status with God, but had physical consequences as well.
Our bodies became corrupted;
“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.” 1 Corinthians 15:50
They became mortal;
“Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker?” Job 4:17
And subject to death
“All flesh would perish together, And man would return to dust.” Job 34:15
Our bodies were made from the dust of the ground and now they shall return to the ground.
“You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust” Psalm 104:29
“All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.” Ecclesiastes 3:20
But as Christians we find hope, comfort and peace in our reconciled relationship with God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that we will be delivered from this body.
“O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:24-25
